Girl Scout Tree Initiative

We are participating in GSEP's GIRL SCOUTS FOREVER GREEN initiative of planting 10,000 trees statewide.   We will be planting the saplings (either Eastern White Pine or Eastern Hemlock) in honor of Girls Scouts 100th Anniversary and will also help contribute towards the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society's goal of planting 1,000,000 trees by 2020!

Our troop has been allocated 3 trees to plant. So, now we have to decide on a place to plant them.

WHERE to plant a tree:
1. Where you have permission to plant
2. Where it’s easy to tend (Water? Access?)
3. As a public amenity, wildlife enhancement, riparian buffer
4. Choose the right tree for the right place (Under wires? Wet area? Salt exposure? Will it obstruct sight line for vehicles or pedestrians?)

If you have any suggestions for a good place, please let me know as soon as possible.

Meeting Eight ~ 5/11/2012

At this meeting, the girls started with by decorating a pengiun pillow. (The penguin was the mascot for the Girl Scout Cookie Sales this year). After the decorations (hopefully) dried, the pillows were filled with stuffing. Unfortunately, we did not have enough to close the pillow opening. So, there are two options for that. You can 1) sew the opening shut or 2) glue the opening shut. If you choose to glue the opening, make sure you have a clip of some sort to hold it closed until the glue dries.

After snack time, the girls made mother's day cards and filled mini buckets with candies for their moms.

The meeting finished with the troop getting to see all of the postcards we received through our postcard exchange. Each girl, received a map of the US where they marked off the states as we read the postcards we received. The postcards were divided amongst the girls to keep.

Our next meeting will be our last meeting for the year: Friday, May 25th. The girls will be earning their last petal.
